Jesus called His followers to be in but not of the world (John 17:15–16), and caring about the welfare of our nation is certainly part of living faithfully in the world. At the same time, Christians are called not to be “conform[ed] to the pattern of this world” (Rom. 12:2 NIV), so we need to care about people more than politics. It hurts our witness to the world by confusing people on exactly what is our message and mission. Jesus didn’t say, “Go and make Republicans (or Democrats) of all nations …”
